Schniff Space

A dog’s page

Life is pretty good now; I get a walk each morning and evening, wheatbix for breakfast and Iams-biscuits and chicken (sometimes lamb) for dinner.  I’m pretty good at talking my humans into giving me treats as well.  I’ve got three big comfy beds and a couple of crash-spots plus a backyard.  Right across the road is a big park and sometimes we go to the river or the beach or ... well all sorts of places.

People don’t often think about what happens to Greyhounds when they finish racing ... I’m one of the lucky ones.  Some are used as blood donors and for teaching purposes but lots of ex-racers are put-down and others are sold for commercial research.  This happens all over the world.

Most people don’t know that we make great pets.  We’re very gentle but because we’re so big people think we’re fierce - don’t tell anyone but we’re not really.  I like a run like the next Grey’ but after that I’m just happy to lounge around looking adorable.  We’re easy to train and rarely bark.  We smile sometimes; that freaks people out and we sing too.

Greyhounds as Pets (GAP) WA finds homes for ex-racer Greyhounds, just like me. If you’ve never met a Greyhound you’ll find GAP at the Perth Royal Show every year.  I know we’re out and about in other cities and other countries too.

I don’t type so my human does it for me and I don’t read either so my human reads to me (sometimes).

Michael Morpurgo wrote a great book called “Born To Run” (Harper Collins 2007) all about a Greyhound who had a couple of different names, just like me.  In Australia the book was called “Best Mate”.

My human got a book called “Retired Racing Greyhounds for DUMMIES” (Hungry Minds 2000) by Lee Livingood which had some good tips too.

Jan Fennell is the dog-whisperer and she has written loads of books about dogs in general.

Miss Mary Hillier is an Artist working in the USA.  Mary has done some paintings of Greyhounds.  She sells them too (hint hint).

Greyhounds are a secret to share.

I’m Joseph aka Go-Joe-Go but now I get called Schniff.  I used to be a racer and when my racing days were over my owners put me on the Greyhounds as Pets (GAP) WA foster programme and after I graduated I was adopted.
